Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (I.N.K.)
999 Chestnut St.
Gainesville, GA 30501
Take exit 60 off I-85 in GA, go on Hwy 51 and Hwy 52 to 985, and go south to exit 22. Take a right. Close to 985, left on Chestnut. It’s a beautiful drive with barely any traffic on Hwy 51 and 52.
www.inkfun.org 770-536-1900
I.N.K. is a children’s museum with a kid size city street. Lining the “street” is a grocery store, post office, café, beauty shop, dentist office, doctor’s office, radiology department, school room, bank, library, performing arts stage with dress up, play set, train table, sheriff’s car, airplane, fire truck and an electric train. They also have a nice art room, pottery studio and toddler’s room. You can bring your own lunch, snacks and drinks, vending machines are available. They have tables that you can use. There is a Schlotski’s, Subway, Burger King and several restaurants in downtown Gainesville, which is very close to the museum, from 985 pass I.N.K. and downtown is about a mile down the road. I.N.K. is a participant in the Association of Children’s Museums, www.children’smuseum.org, so if you have a membership to another children’s museum with the reciprocal program you might be able to get in at no charge. We love this museum, the kids can play for hours there, it’s easy to get in and out of, and the people that work there are great!

Pontoon boat rentals, jet ski rentals, kayak rentals and canoe rentals are available on Lake Hartwell in Athens, Clemson, Hartwell, Lavonia, Mountain Rest, Seneca, Starr and Townville. Before going out on any lake, make sure to get a good laminated boat map. It should show all the navigational markers, boat ramps and recreational areas.

You can sign up for a safe boating course from either the US Power Squadrons at 866-430-2628, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary at 864-224-0593/706-376-0096, SC Dept of Natural Resources at 864-654-8266 ext. 18, the GA Department of Natural Resources at 770-535-5499 or call 864-972-2085 or go to http://a0700205.uscgaux.info. For hunting and boating educational classes in SC, call 800-277-4301.

By boat you can…

Explore Andersonville Island, which is only accessible by boat. It’s a large island on Lake Hartwell near Portman Marina that is usually marked on Lake Hartwell maps, near buoys LBC1 – LBC9 and S1 – S13. The wildlife and ruins make this a fun island to explore.

Discover an island with 50 graves dating back to the 1700 and 1800’s. The large island is located near buoy S-55 and S-53 on Lake Hartwell. To find the graves, beach your boat on the North side of the island and hike to the tallest point on the island.

Visit “Broyles Party Island” which is located near Broyles Rec. Area and is only accessible by boat. It is a very popular Lake Hartwell spot to hang out by boat.

Go to Clemson’s Larry W. Abernathy Park which has a few new free public city boat docks, a restroom, picnic area and playground. From the docks you can either go to places on Hwy 123 like a gas station, fast food places, Waffle House (open 24 hours), hardware, liquor and drug store or go down the nice boardwalk to downtown Clemson. Close to buoy S-100 on Lake Hartwell, go down the cove right before you go under the Hwy 123 bridge, then you will see the city docks.

Eat at one of several Lake Hartwell area restaurants that can be accessed by boat in cities such as Anderson, Clemson, Fair Play, Hartwell, Lavonia, Seneca and Townville.

If you enjoy a day (or night) of sport fishing, then Lake Hartwell will become one of your favorite destinations. Did you know that the record for a Striped Bass caught in Lake Hartwell was an astounding 59.5 pounds? We can’t guarantee you that you will catch a record, but Stripers in the 15 to 30 pound range are caught routinely and that is definitely a fish tale for your friends. Lake Hartwell also has Bluegill, Redbreast, Pumpkinseed and Shellcracker as well as Black Crappie, Largemouth Bass and Hybrid Bass. So no matter what your favorite type of fishing, from a day with the kids to a day in pursuit of that trophy lunker, Lake Hartwell delivers.

An agreement between GA and SC permits fishing on Lake Hartwell with a license from either state.
